Historically schools have used a tape library system to backup their data on a daily basis. This would normally take an incremental or differential backup most evenings and a full backup each Friday/Weekend. A member of the IT support team would have the responsibility for these tapes and would need to take tapes away from site in case of a disaster in school.
Common issues with this historical backup method include:

  • Extra responsibility to change tapes in the library drive
  • More tapes to take away from site
  • Expense of the tape library system
  • Regular replacement of tape drives required
  • Backups are not easily test restored
  • Backups are not encrypted
  • Backups over-running into the following morning, affecting network performance & lessons
  • Only able to take full backups at the weekend due to the amount of data
  • Constant upgrade of tape drives and media to meet the demands of data

A school can have anywhere from 50GB to 20TB of data to backup, of which almost all of the data is important. The curriculum data is important as it is the build up of each pupil's portfolio for their coursework and teaching staff heavily use ICT resources in each lesson. In addition to this an increasing number of schools have implemented a virtual learning environment where staff  record lessons delivered on an interactive whiteboard to allow students to recap or revise. A secondary school will also have a much larger School Management System due to the number of staff and students.

A typical secondary school will have a large number of servers, some physical and some virtual. They may also have a storage area network (SAN). Oakford’s remote backup solution suits all these environments perfectly. This includes all modules across multiple platforms while also allowing you to install our remote backup software on as many servers as you wish, include all modules and extensions and you can create as many backup sets as you like.
